CVS EDI Vendor Requirements: The Complete 2026 Guide

Everything brands need to know about selling to CVS Health via EDI — documents, compliance, and setup

April 10, 2026

CVS Health operates more than 9,000 retail pharmacies plus a growing digital front-store business. For health, beauty, wellness, and consumer packaged goods brands, CVS is a critical distribution channel. And like every major pharmacy chain, CVS runs on EDI — their receiving, replenishment, and invoicing workflows are almost entirely electronic.

If you are onboarding with CVS, here is what to expect.

Required EDI Documents

CVS uses ANSI X12 transactions across both their DC network and their direct-to-store programs.

DocumentNamePurpose
850Purchase OrderCVS sends the order
855PO AcknowledgmentYou confirm line availability
856Advance Ship NoticeCarton and pack details
810InvoiceMatches PO and ASN
997Functional AcknowledgmentTechnical receipt
846Inventory AdviceRequired for some replenishment programs
860PO ChangeCVS modifies an existing order

CVS is strict about 997 acknowledgments. Every inbound 850 must get a 997 back within minutes, not hours.

Vendor Requirements

CVS measures vendors on:

  • Case fill rate against the PO
  • On-time delivery to the DC
  • ASN accuracy
  • GS1-128 carton label scan success
  • Invoice match rate against PO and receiving
  • Item data accuracy in CVS's item master

Health and beauty vendors also face category-specific requirements around expiration dates, lot codes, and FDA compliance metadata.

Chargebacks and Risk

CVS chargebacks commonly include:

  • Missing or late ASN: $250 or more per shipment
  • Fill rate below target: percentage of shortfall
  • Invoice mismatch: invoice held until reconciled
  • Late shipment: ship-window violation fee
  • Carton label scan failure

CVS also enforces packaging compliance. Over-packed or under-packed cartons that do not match the 856 hierarchy get flagged at receiving.

Where Brands Struggle

Expiration date reporting

Health and beauty categories require expiration dates on the ASN at the carton or item level. Missing this data gets your shipment rejected.

Item master mismatches

CVS loads your items into their item master during setup. If you change a UPC, dimension, or case pack without updating CVS, every subsequent ASN fails.

DC versus DSD flows

CVS runs both DC-based and direct-to-store flows. Each has different EDI requirements. Vendors often build for one and get caught off guard by the other.

Setup Process

  1. Get approved as a CVS supplier
  2. Complete item setup in CVS's vendor portal
  3. Receive EDI specs and trading partner IDs
  4. Establish AS2 or VAN connection
  5. Complete EDI testing with CVS
  6. Run a test shipment through a CVS DC
  7. Move to production

Platform Compatibility

JayChris EDI integrates with Shopify, WooCommerce, BigCommerce, NetSuite, and custom backends. You manage your catalog in your existing tools and JayChris handles the CVS translation layer end to end.

Cost Comparison

Health and beauty brands often face premium pricing from legacy EDI providers because of the added compliance complexity. Expect $700 to $2,000 per month with SPS Commerce or TrueCommerce for a CVS-ready setup.

With JayChris EDI it's $99/month + $0.25 per EDI document — all 28 retailers included, no per-retailer fees.
